"Mistletoe"
by Liz VanZandt
Nathan Bridger looked down at his watch. Eight o'clock. Great, I haven't even been here for an hour and already I'm bored, he thought. With a sigh he grabbed a drink from a passing waiter and tugged at his uniform collar. Why do these things have to be so damn uncomfortable.
Absentmindedly, he scanned the room, filled with people from the UEO celebrating the Christmas holiday. Why did I decide not to bring a date? He quickly answered himself, Because you were too scared to ask her.
His eyes came to rest on a figure standing near one of the doorways. She wore a simple red dress that came down to her ankles. The dress clung to the woman's body in all the right places, held up by only two thin straps. A slit came up the side, exposing much of a shapely long leg. The woman's auburn hair was pulled back into a chignon at her neck.
Nathan smiled and decided to brave the trek across the room to talk to her. Approaching her, the woman's companion noticed him first.
"Captain," Katie Hitchcock said.
"Nathan," Kristin Westphalen said turning around. She leaned up and kissed his cheek. "Where have you been hiding?"
"As far away from the brass as I could get." All three laughed. "Both of you ladies look lovely tonight."
"Thank you," both answered in unison, and then broke out into giggles.
"You look good too, sir," Katie finally managed.
"Ugh, I always hated the dress uniform, too stiff."
"That's why I opt for the dress," Katie said.
"Lucky you."
"Are you here with someone?" Kristin asked.
"No. You?"
"No, I almost had a date, but I just couldn't bring myself to ask him."
"That makes two of us," Nathan mumbled. "Well than what do you say we take advantage of our common problem? Care to dance?"
Kristin smiled, "I would love to."
"Uh, Captain, I think there's something you need to do first," Katie said pointing to the ceiling.
Both Nathan and Kristin looked up and saw a sprig of mistletoe hanging right above their heads. She smiled at the sight.
Too nervous to think straight, Nathan leaned over and gave her a quick peck.
Startled, Kristin frowned. "Nathan Bridger," she admonished, "what the hell was that?" He just stared at her. "Don't try to tell me that is a kiss. I would have thought that with your reputation, you'd be a better kisser than that."
"My reputation?" he said.
"Mmmhmm, apparently in your younger days you were quite the paramour." She brought her hands up his chest and around his neck, pulling him down to her. "I'm curious if those stories are true."
Before he knew it, her lips were on his. At the gentle insistence of her tongue, he opened his mouth, allowing breath, spit and tongues to mix.
Behind them, Katie found herself nervously looking around the room to avoid watching them. She could practically feel the passion from the kiss, even at a distance.
Finally they broke apart, both breathless. "How's that?" Nathan asked with a grin.
"Wow," was all she could manage.
"Now, how about that dance."
