SUMMARY: A discussion.
CODES: SQ
RATING: PG13
DISCLAIMER: Characters aren't mine. Damn.
NOTES: I recently wrote a similar story with Voyager characters, and thought it might be fun to do it with these two. And then with the beginning of both college and pro football seasons this weekend, it sorta got off track. Oh well.
"Tight Ends"
by Liz VanZandt
"Boxers," Katie Hitchcock guessed as Miguel Ortiz walked past the table. He gave the two women sitting there a strange look.
Next to Katie, Kristin Westphalen nodded across the room at the serving line where Jonathan Ford was piling food on his tray. "Briefs."
"With an ass like that, I certainly hope so."
Kristin looked over at her friend with eyes wide in surprise. "Katie!"
"What?" the engineer shrugged. "Can't a girl compliment a guy? Jeez." She took a sip of coffee as Tim O'Neill walked past. "Briefs."
Nathan Bridger stepped in the room and immediately noticed the two ladies seated next to each other at a table on the far side of the room. He couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in curiosity; Kristin and Katie together could be a dangerous combination. Especially the way they were both hiding grins behind their coffee cups.
Claiming a cup of coffee, he made his way over to the table. "Morning, ladies. Mind if I join you?"
"Go right ahead, Captain," Katie smiled, motioning to the chair across the table. "We were just discussing the finer points of ... uh, football. What with the Super Bowl coming up next week and all."
Nathan nodded skeptically. "I wasn't aware either of you were interested in football."
"Just because I usually prefer the mandates of science over the mindless violence of the gridiron, doesn't mean I don't have an appreciation for the complexities of the game," Kristin objected.
"Really," Nathan raised an eyebrow. "The complexities?"
"Mmmhmm," Kristin's eyes twinkled with laughter as she finished her cup of coffee. "But I'm afraid I can't stay and chat, I have work to do." She rose, looking over at Hitchcock. "Oh, and Katie, in answer to your question, I've always preferred tight ends over quarterbacks." With a wink, she turned and left, Katie's laughter trailing after her.
