"K is for KP Duty"
by Liz VanZandt

"I can't believe the kind of luck I have. I mean, we're within spitting distance of Rio de Janeiro," Ben Krieg looked down at the soapy sink in front of him and sighed, "and I'm stuck in here washing pots and pans."

"Ben," Lucas Wolenczak sighed in frustration, "could we please just wash these dishes and get this over without turning it into another of your melodramas?"

But Ben just ignored the teen and continued on with his rant. "As soon as I get out of here I am going to find the nearest set of UEO rules and regulations and look up the section regarding discipline. I'm pretty sure it outlaws cruel and unusual punishment."

"It's KP duty, Ben. I don't think washing dishes was what the framers of the constitution had in mind when they outlawed cruel and unusual punishment."

"It's an arcane practice, Lucas! No one in their right mind has used KP duty for punishment in ages. What does Bridger expect us to do next, peel potatoes?"

"Well then maybe you shouldn't have short sheeted the Captain's bed," Lucas pointed out.

"Well he wouldn't have known who did it if someone didn't have loose lips," Ben countered.

"You think I told him?" Lucas waved a soapy hand through the air, a splatter of bubbles landing on Ben's shoulder that was ignored. "I helped you do it, Ben. You think I'd turn myself in? You saw how mad the Captain was; I'm not stupid enough to risk my life like that."

"Well somebody told him, or else how did we end up on KP duty?"

"Gee, I don't know, Ben. Maybe it's cause he knows there's only a few people on board who'd be stupid enough to cross him like that."
